VA-950 Corrosive Sulfur Treatment

VA-950 Corrosive Sulfur Treatment converts corrosive sulfur to non-corrosive forms, stops metal dissolution in oils and stops the formation and precipitation of sulfur-metal salts. 

VA-950 Corrosive Sulfur Treatment is added at a 2% treat rate to transformer oils that test “positive” for corrosive sulfur.  VA-950 combines two powerful antioxidants, two metal passivators and a unique blend of chemical reagents that actually change the most corrosive type of sulfur (DBDS) to a non-corrosive species.

Other treatments for corrosive sulfur simply cover up any exposed copper in a transformer, preventing it from dissolving and combining with sulfur in the oil.  But a single passivator does not adequately treat all of the different copper and brass alloys in modern transformers.  This approach also ignores other metals, such as iron and aluminum, that can dissolve and combine with the free sulfides.

VA-950 uses two different passivators, completely passivating the range of copper, iron, and aluminum in the system.  VA-950 also has a blend of powerful antioxidants that stop the formation of acids (byproducts of oxidation) in the oil.  These acids play an important role in the dissolution of metals into the oil.

In addition, VA-950 has two chemical reagents that react with the most aggressive type of sulfur, dibenzo disulfide, or DBDS, and change it into a non-aggressive, non-corrosive type.  Together, the three approaches – passivating all of the metals available, stopping oxidation and changing DBDS – are proven to solve the problem of corrosive sulfur in transformer oil.
